Come and See and Serve
Come see and serve with the Sisters of Charity Federation in New Orleans this Labor Day Weekend, September 3-6, 2010. Single Catholic women ages 18-45 who are considering God's call to active religious life are invited to spend the weekend with Sisters of Charity, ministering to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. We will reflect on the experience of service to the poor in the tradition of St. Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac and Elizabeth Ann Seton, as well as have opportunities for prayer and sharing with others on the discernment journey. Contact Sister Maryanne Ruzzo for details. ruzzomar@yahoo.com or 617-472-3860 617-472-3860

Sisters of Charity recognized for service on McNab’s Island

This weekend, the Sisters of Charity will be recognized for their service on McNab’s Island more than 140 years ago.

When the ship England arrived in Halifax in 1866, its passengers were quarantined on McNab’s Island due to an outbreak of cholera on the voyage. Three Sisters of Charity went to the island to help care for the sick and the orphans who’d lost their parents to the disease. This is commonly thought of as the beginning of the Sisters’ service in health care, which led ultimately to the establishment of the Halifax Infirmary hospital and nursing school.

Associates have donated a park bench and a plaque will be unveiled, recognizing the Sisters’ service on McNab’s. The unveiling will take place in conjunction with the Friends of McNab’s Island Family Picnic, on Saturday, July 17 at 1:30 pm. The bench is located on Garrison Road, overlooking Finlays Cove, where many of the cholera victims were buried.
