The following article appeared in the Summer 2007 issue of Bringing Hope.
S. Peggy (Margarita in Spanish) directs what we would call
a medical clinic, the Dispensario Santa Cruz, which has a
pharmacy, doctors’ offices, lab, and dental services. (At
least 1,000 people pass through this centre every week.)
She attends to the daily chores, whether it’s fixing
something that’s broken, talking with staff, checking what
needs to be ordered, etc. She also helps people fill their prescriptions or get their lab work done.

S. Catherine (Catalina in Spanish) directs Elizabeth Seton
Centre in a poor area on the outskirts of Baní. Between
the children suffering from malnutrition and those in the
day care and pre-school, there are approximately 150
children, all under the age of six. She also attends to
whatever needs attention that day – finding an electrician
to replace electrical wires stolen the night before, talking
to staff, playing with the kids, etc. A doctor visits three
times a week and a dentist twice a week. There’s also a
small pharmacy and a lab. |

• S. Roberta works with patients in their homes – making
sure they have their medicine, helping with colostomies,
taking people with disabilities to the doctor because they
wouldn’t be able to get on the back of a motorcycle taxi,
their other transportation option. Once a week she’s the
nurse/secretary in the dispensario. In November and
December she provides the music for graduation at an
elementary school.
• All three Sisters are involved in the local parish.
S. Catherine is responsible for catechists, the monthly prebaptismal
course for parents and godparents of children
under seven, and she distributes Communion. Sisters
Peggy and Roberta are in charge of the Sunday morning
choir. They all pray together or go to Mass in the evening. |
