Caritas Residence

There was great excitement as close to 100 Sisters moved into Caritas Residence, Halifax, in November 2008. Those who had previously lived in Assisted Living at DePaul Hall joined those who moved from the Motherhouse, to make the sparkling new facility their own.

Caritas resident S. Anna d’Entremont expresses it well: “I just love it here. I think I have died and gone to heaven. I just wish I was 66 instead of 87 so I could be here longer!”

Sisters are enjoying the spacious bedrooms and well-equipped community rooms as well as the panoramic views of the city and the Bedford Basin. Life is also very full at nearby Parkstone Enhanced Care, where approximately 30 Sisters receive full nursing care. The Sisters of Charity bus makes the short trip daily, filled with Sisters ministering to Sisters, ever mindful of their care for each other.

The residence includes:
■ suites for independent living, assisted living and some studio apartments
■ a dining room with flexible space for expansion when needed
■ a chapel, which seats about 130
Caritas -- from Deus Caritas Est, inscribed on the official coat of arms for the Congregation -- is the link to the past. Though normally translated as “God is love”, caritas also translates to charity.
