New York
The Sisters of Charity returned to New York in 1924, the home state of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Our Lady of Angels in Brooklyn was the first school the Sisters opened. Between 1924 and 1956 other missions were established. Although large institutional ministries are now part of our past in New York, we can still be found in education, healthcare, and social service. New York will always be home to the Sisters of Charity.

Alberta
In the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, Sister Frances de Chantal McKee arrived with four Sisters at Saint Vincent Convent in Edmonton in 1925 where they began teaching at Saint Andrew School. Besides establishing other schools throughout Alberta, we also opened hospitals in Westlock, Barrhead, Hardisty, and Jasper. Today, our work continues to flourish in the West. Shown here is the former Seton Hospital in Jasper.

Quebec Missions
In 1935 the Sisters of Charity opened Saint Patrick Convent in Quebec City. Nine years later we replaced the Grey Nuns at Saint Brigid's Home where we cared for English-speaking elderly men and women as well as children. This photo, taken in the 1950's, shows Sister Petronilla attending to the young girls in her care.

MSVM Fire
In the early hours of January 31st, 1951, on the coldest night in 25 years in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse burnt to the ground. Students, novices, postulants and many Sisters watched the blazing fire destroy their beautiful home. Despite this devastation, there was much gratitude, because not one life was lost during the fire. Although never officially stated, the fire was believed to have started somewhere in the kitchen. |
Peru
After the Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI challenged religious orders to send some of their members to labor among the peoples of the Third World. In 1968, the first mission in Chiclayo, Peru, was established. From this beginning, the congregation broadened its international boundaries. Today our Sisters serve in Lima and Ilo, Peru.
